This book is an outgrowth of the authors' own personal discovery of and exposure to southwestern rock art. This easy to read and extensively illustrated title briefly describes flute player motifs at numerous sites throughout the southwest. Myths of the Hopi and Zuni, as well as a presentation of such images on ceramics and kiva wall murals round out the text. Also includes notes, a glossary of southwestern rock art and archaeology terms, a reference list of 100 titles, an appendix with 165 example drawings of the flute player motif, and an extensive index including an alphabetical list of sites referenced in the text.
Dennis Slifer is also the author of the more recently published Signs of Life: Rock Art of the Upper Rio Grande.
